Mary seacole brief biography
Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. InMary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in Seacole was an inveterate traveller, and before her marriage visited other parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas, as well as Central America and Britain.
On these trips she complemented her knowledge of traditional medicine with European medical ideas. Her father was a white Scottish soldier in the British army. Her mother was of mixed race. Her mother ran a boarding house for army officers and their families. Twice when she was a teenager Mary visited London. Then inshe married Edwin Horatio Seacole.
Unfortunately, he died in Afterward, Mary ran a boarding house.

In she tried to treat people in Kingston suffering from cholera. She used herbal medicines. In Mary went to Panama to visit her brother who ran a hotel there. Seacole's name appears in an appendix to the Key Stage 2 National Curriculumas an example of a significant Victorian historical figure. There is no requirement that teachers include Seacole in their lessons.
Opposing this, Greg Jenner, historical consultant to Horrible Historieshas stated that while he thought her medical achievements may have been exaggerated, removing Seacole from the curriculum would be a mistake. British social commentator Patrick Vernon has opined that many of the claims that Seacole's achievements were exaggerated have come from an establishment that is determined to suppress and hide the black contribution to British history.
Jesse Jackson and others wrote a letter to The Times protesting against the mooted removal of Mary Seacole from the National Curriculum.
